Valve has announced that its Steam game client and store is now available on Linux Ubuntu computers.

The Steam client is available to download from the Ubuntu Software Centre, launching with 60 games that are compatible with the operating system.

To promote the launch of Steam for Linux, the online store is holding a sale on compatible Linux games including Half-Life, Bastion, FTL: Faster Than Light and Crusader Kings 2. Team Fortress 2 is available as a free-to-play title, with users who download and play the game through Linux receiving a special in-game item of Tux the Linux mascot penguin.

Steam for Linux also features the Steam Big Picture mode, allowing users to connect their Linux computer to a television with a unique interface designed to be used with a controller.

Valve is currently working on its own Linux-based console-like PC commonly referred to as the 'Steam Box'.
