Valve to enter console market with Steam Box?

The Verge claims that the company is working on a hybrid machine compatible with PC software and Steam games.

The Steam Box will apparently include a Core i7 processor, 8GB of RAM and an unspecified NVIDIA graphics card. It will also feature a branded controller, along with extensive USB compatibility.

Valve reportedly held meetings with potential launch partners at the Consumer Electronics Show earlier this year. The possibility of the platform hosting rival download services such as EA's Origin is said to have been discussed.

Developers would be able to develop games for the system without paying a licence fee, making it a cheaper alternative to the leading consoles. New iterations of the Steam Box have been pencilled in for every three to four years.

Dell's Alienware X51 gaming PC is thought to have been developed as a precursor to the Steam Box, featuring the same "retroactively upgradable" software that will power Valve's proposed machine.

Reports suggest that the Steam Box could appear at one of this year's gaming expos, such as next week's GDC or E3.

[09 March 2012] Valve has poured cold water on this rumour for now, damn shame!!!
