There is a great article/book on Shacknews written by David Craddock posted late last year where you can only read the first few chapters for free you will need to signin and pay to read the full thing which is very much worth the small asking price tag (you will also be able to download the MOBI or ePub versions), it goes from Quake too Team Fortress too Half-Life and everything in-between.

Based on interviews with the developers, Rocket Jump explores the making of the Quake franchise, the culture that simultaneously shaped and fractured creator id Software, and other developers whose creativity defined an era.

You can read it yourself by following this link right here.
